In my personal opinion you should only contact your ex if you broke up with them. If they broke up with you let THEM come to you. You have to come across like the breakup meant nothing to you. Like you can take them or leave them. By not contacting your ex and letting your ex see you living your life on Facebook or Instagram that's gonna make them more compelled to contact you. They are gonna naturally wonder what's going on in your life and why are you so happy. They will want you back when they see doing better than them and that your happy WITHOUT them. By coming up with ANY excuse to contact your ex after they broke up with you your letting them know you're beneath them. Let him (or her) come to YOU. Make them eat crow.

I know how you feel but trust me if you contact him you're gonna regret it.  Because deep down inside that's not what you want. You really want him to contact you, right? I know it's hard. It's so many times that I wanted to pick up the phone or reach out to my ex on FB. But if you want optimal results (instead of instant gratification) you have to let HIM reach out to you. Veronica mentions in her book that contacting your ex first signals lack to the universe. That's not the vibe you want to emit because I'm sure your ex will pick up on that and all you will do is push him further away. If you don't have her book, pick it up.  You need to become really busy so you're not thinking about your ex all the time. Because when you're in a relationship with somebody you're not thinking about them all the time because you KNOW that you have them. The goal isn't to completely forget about your ex but it's to not OBSESS over them. What do you do during the day? Do you work? If not, get a job. Volunteer on your down time. Plan a weekend getaway. Go out shopping or to eat on the weekends. Signup for a class or get a hobby that requires you to leave the house.

No, don't delete him as a friend.

1) STOP Messaging him. 

You don't need to tell him happy new year/happy birthday/I hope your mother gets better. He's not stupid. He knows your just coming up with ANY excuse to contact him. Which makes you look desperate/needy. You're telling him that he's better than you. Men aren't going to chase after a woman if they think they’re better than her. 2) Use facebook to your advantage

Put up pictures of you having fun, doing hobbies, traveling, and looking like a million bucks. Show him that you have your own life and that you're not thinking about him (even if you are). It's all about perception. I don't care who you are, EVERYBODY wants to be on the winning team. So, SHOW him that he's missing out but let HIM come to you.
