Hi friends :-)
I've been reading up about Neville Goddard a bit more since last night and I found this really great article that I wanted to share with everyone!
I like how he points out that for many of us, when we notice negative self-talk, we instantly try to make it super positive (I am certainly guilty of doing this lol). Like we'll think "Uh, he's not here yet" or "I'll never get that job" and then we'll reframe it the second we notice it to "He loves me!" or "I love my job" and while we say this, we're quietly thinking "this is a bunch of bull crap.....like he's clearly not into me and my boss can eat my a**......". It's only natural, we feel like we have to be positive or else we won't get what we want, and we also don't want to be upset and sad. But, it really isn't about getting what we want (although that is a nice after thought! and we will get what we want) but about feeling relief bit by bit and just appreciating and being happy where we are.
This is the technique the author mentions:
"When you notice NEGATIVE INNER TALK - you will silence it - by QUICKLY putting all your attention on what can be seen in your physical world. (Look around - do it NOW!)
Then quickly put all your attention on what sensations you feel - like the sun on your face and the wind in your hair. Wiggle your toes for extra good fun (notice how they enjoy that) and notice what sounds are all around you in the world - now."
And I found it really helpful and quite practical. As an example, I was walking down the street and I felt like not really focusing what was on my mind so I just looked at was in front of me and just said in my head "bag, bag, shoe, bag" and I started laughing. I kind of put my own spin on it and just started focusing on random objects in front of me, but suddenly I was feeling better and not as serious and it felt nice. Even though I wasn't in a negative place with my thoughts, I felt my attachment to the thoughts I had dwindling! I think this is honestly a really great technique and I used it a few more times on my way home and felt myself letting go of the thoughts in my mind a lot easier.
Sometimes when we're negative and doubting, it's hard to focus on what we want and we end up feeling worse. I think this method (think 'going general') provides a really easy, light-hearted way of focusing on something else that might not cause you a lot of negative emotion, so once you're feeling better you can go back to your previous thoughts or just continue to appreciate your surroundings. I'm really glad I found this article because I find it quite simple to use and a really quick way to feel relief!
